About this race
Join us at Penn Park on Sunday, March 12 at 9:00AM for the inaugural Powel 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run! The Start and Finish Line will be at Shoemaker Green, adjacent to Franklin Field and the Palestra along 33rd Street. Please arrive by 8:30AM for registration and bib/t-shirt distribution.Â
You also have the ability to donate to the event to help the Powel Home and School Association (HSA) ensure that all members of the Powel community are able to participate in the run. We appreciate your generosity!
ABOUT US:
Samuel Powel is one of West Philadelphia's premier public elementary schools located in Powelton Village, in the heart of University City. Our mission is to educate the WHOLE CHILD. We lay a foundation that prepares students for success; We take responsibility for the education of every child and maintain high expectations for ALL as we prepare them for scholarship, leadership and citizenship. Powel Elementary School is a place where ALL students feel safe, valued, accepted, respected, and supported to grow & reach their full potential.
Powel's Home & School Association is a Parent/Family organization that supports the education and engagement of Powel students by fostering relationships among the school, parents and teachers. Our objectives are:
- To provide a vehicle for communication and community building between parents and the administration and faculty.
- To enhance the educational experience by supporting academic and enrichment activities
- To improve the environment at our school by providing volunteer and financial support.
WHY WE'RE RUNNING:
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, parents, students, teachers, staff and administrators have had very limited opportunities to engage with each other. Many of our historically successful fundraising activities have had to be modified or cut altogether for the sake of the health and safety of our school community. So we have decided to start a new Powel School tradition: The Powel Pride 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run. Our GOAL is to fundraise in a healthy, safe and equitable way while showing our Powel Pride!
