Haisley Grace Herlong unknowingly was born with a congenital defect that occurs at seven weeks gestation called monodini malformation, which is abnormality of the cochlea. Â
Haisleys cochlea only has a 1-1.5 turn with an enlarged vestibule, where as a normal cochlear has a 2.5 turn. Â Due to Haisleys defect she was diagnosed with profound hearing loss and will need cochlear implants in order to gain access to sound and to develop spoken language.
We are holding this 5K running event to bring awareness to profound deafness. Â All monies raised will be to help with some medical expenses and a donation to other hearing foundations to help support profound hearing. Â
The "Let's HEAR it for HAISLEY GRACE 5K Run/Walk/Ruck" is a charitable event held annually on March 25th in Saluda, South Carolina. This event is dedicated to supporting Haisley Grace and aims to raise awareness and funds for her needs. While specific details on the race's founding history are not provided, its recurring nature suggests a community-driven effort with growing support. Participants can expect a family-friendly 5K that accommodates various activity levels, including running, walking, and rucking. The terrain in Saluda is typically characterized by rolling hills, which can offer a moderate challenge to runners and walkers alike. Given the timing in late March, participants should anticipate potentially mild to warm weather conditions, though it's always advisable to check the forecast closer to the event date. The inclusion of a "Ruck" option suggests an opportunity for those who wish to carry a weighted pack as part of their participation, adding a unique element to the event.
