What is the P.S. I Love You event?
Patrick Steurer (P.S.) was a 1997 graduate of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and a longtime member of the downtown Akron YMCA, where his father Dan Steurer has served in various volunteer roles including as chair of the YMCA’s Annual Jack-O-Lantern Jog 5K, which “ran” for 20 consecutive years and preceded the P.S. I Love You 5K.

In 2007, for a 10 year high school reunion Patrick decided to run in an “alumni run”.  He began his training by seeking guidance at the YMCA, and though this was his first competitive run in a decade, he placed second and a love of running was re-ignited from his youth.  That year, and many subsequent years, Patrick chose to run in the Jack-O-Lantern Jog.  He was often seen at the YMCA encouraging members at all stages of their fitness journeys and putting a smile on the faces of those around him.

In 2012, he ran his first Akron Marathon relay and continued his growth as a runner by running the “Jack Jog” and several other 5K’s. In 2013 he completed his first half marathon in under 2 hours!  After suffering an injury in 2014 he was unable to compete in any of the marathon series events and missed most of the summer running season.  He chose the “Jack Jog” as his first race to return to running.

In 2015, he planned to run his first full marathon but tragically, died during a training run and was not able to meet this goal.  Today, the sun is not as bright, nor the sky as blue as one of the happiest and gentlest people who ever called the Y “home” is no longer with us.  While Patrick overcame several physical challenges in his life, he always walked with a spring in his step and a smile on his face.

Patrick Steurer, we love you.

Why Middlebury?

The Middlebury neighborhood was the first settlement in what is now Akron, Ohio.  Middlebury has a rich history of manufacturing and was once home to grain mills, clay and rubber factories and a booming economy.  Today, new investment can be seen along the E. Market St. corridor.  Middlebury is home to Summa Health, Goodyear, Keep Akron Beautiful, The Well CDC, and many more community based businesses.  Spend a day in Middlebury tending to one of the many community gardens, grabbing a cup of coffee at Compass, shopping at a local business, or enjoying the outdoors on the Freedom Trail or the Little Cuyahoga River.
