The Vermont 50 Mountain Bike or Ultra Run is a challenging and historic endurance event held annually on September 29th in Brownsville, Vermont. Established in 1991, this race is renowned for its demanding 50-mile course that winds through the scenic but rugged terrain of the Green Mountains. Participants can choose between a mountain bike race or a 50K ultra-run, both of which test physical and mental fortitude. The event is known for its grassroots feel and strong community support, making it a beloved fixture for seasoned ultra-endurance athletes and mountain bikers alike. Runners and riders should anticipate a demanding course featuring approximately 7,500 feet of climbing, a significant portion of which is on unpaved, technical trails. The terrain typically consists of dirt roads, singletrack, and some gravel sections, often interspersed with steep, rocky ascents and descents. Conditions on race day can vary widely, from warm and dry to muddy and wet, given Vermont's unpredictable late September weather. Participants should be prepared for a true mountain experience, requiring strong technical skills, excellent pacing strategies, and a high level of fitness. The Vermont 50 is distinguished by its iconic and challenging course, which has remained largely unchanged over the years, offering a consistent test for repeat participants. The race also boasts a reputation for its exceptional aid stations, often staffed by enthusiastic volunteers, and its stunning autumn foliage backdrop, adding to the overall spectacle of the event. It's more than just a race; it's an immersive Vermont mountain adventure that attracts a dedicated following year after year.
