About this race

Rails to Trails began in 2007 as a Boston Marathon Qualifier, but includes a one mile fun run, a 5K, and a half marathon.  Several different groups and tons of volunteers from the surrounding community, along with the scenic route and 3/4 mile tunnel, make this a unique marathon experience.  We are proud to say that 100% of the proceeds after expenses are donated back to the surrounding communities.

What to expect

Written from race data

The Rails to Trails Marathon, held annually on October 6th in Norwalk, Wisconsin, offers a unique running experience on a former railway bed. While specific historical details of the event's origin aren't provided in the given information, its name strongly suggests a connection to the conversion of disused railway lines into recreational trails, a common practice that preserves transportation history while creating scenic routes. Participants can anticipate a well-organized race set against the backdrop of the Wisconsin countryside. The event is characterized by its predominantly flat and smooth terrain, as railway beds are naturally graded for efficient transport. Runners can expect a surface primarily composed of crushed limestone or packed gravel, making it ideal for achieving personal bests. The 6 refers to the event type, indicating it is likely a standard marathon distance (26.2 miles). The scenic route through Norwalk, WI, offers a peaceful and immersive natural environment, with the predictable surface minimizing the challenges often associated with technical trail running.
